Additional Involvement

Campus Girl Scouts

A newly founded organization this past fall (2015), Campus Girl Scouts is an organization that volunteers at local Girl Scout troop meetings and events. This past semester I had the opportunity to attend the meetings for one troop and serve as a troop leader. Interacting with the daisies and brownies, we had a bridging ceremony, decorated cookies for the holidays, and helped the girls plan their end of the year party. The Girl Scouts are learning important skills by earning badges and in the future we intend to plan events that can earn those badges in science and technology.

Bridge to Industry Outreach Project

Bridge to Industry is a event hosted by the Department of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering. Each year the event features a friendly outreach competition that results in the department funding the program for use in local low-income schools in Leon county. I worked with a team of 8 other students to brainstorm outreach ideas that supported learning about chemical engineering principles. We designed, planned, and proposed our idea during a 5 minute presentation to a panel of judges. We were awarded first place and received a stipend to implement the outreach project. Our project was called "Science in a Bag" and it introduced 8th-grade students to the principles of chemical and physical changes using household items.
